Generally, battery life of quartz watch  is 1-3years.And the so-called "long-term" here means beyond the battery life. You should know the battery of quartz watch is silver oxide battery, which will self-discharge even in non-use state. The self-discharge rate has a great connection with the temperature and humidity. The higher the temperature ,the greater the self-discharge rate.

some silver oxide batteries particularly low-quality and bad-seal ones are prone to leakage. What is more , this problem tend to occur in situation where the battery is running out electricity or without electricity. There are alkaline electrolyte inside the silver oxide battery, typically sodium hydroxide or potassium hyddroxide, which are highly corrosive and will harm watch greatly once leaked. First , it will rust reed contact of the watch circuit.Second,a serious leakage will rust the watch movement plywood. In the most terrible situation your watch dial would get hurt.

In addition to watch , there are many cases where electronic products get hurt by battery. For example, flashlight battery on long-term non-use and without electricity wiil hair up  ,making it hard to dig out from the flashlight.Silver oxide battery also have such problem , but it is called "gas up "here.

Therefore, quartz watch on long-term non-use especially the relatively high-class ones should be sent to repair store to take out the battery.Besides, replace dead battery with a quality one since a considerable proportion of watch failures are caused by battery.
